Apostolic Missional Roles

Apostolic Gift Clusters:
Understanding Your
Missional Blend

While some people primarily receive the apostolic gift, many others are a blend of two or three dominant missional gift roles.  These personal blends when combined with a believer's experience, education, spiritual gifts, and personality create a uniquely gifted person whom God has chosen for a specific missional purpose.

Apostolic Gift Clusters are a unique blending or missional gift mix that combines secondary and tertiary (third) APEPT roles with the apostolic role.  Your apostolic gifting may center around one of these gift clusters.

Apostolic-Prophetic (APr) Gift Cluster

Investigating Developers

The Prophetic Apostle (APr) Gift Cluster blends the primary apostolic gifted role with a secondary emphasis on prophetic roles. This gift mix produces “Investigating Developers” who may believe they are called to start new approaches, ministries or new congregations/churches in order to address the spiritual conditions in the community (or congregation) that they discern. To prepare for this type of ministry you will need to learn a lot about cultural groups in the community and the congregation in order to understand how cultural differences impact spiritual conditions. You may need to develop new approaches to researching the community cultures in order to discern current spiritual realities. You may also need to develop new approaches to presenting community and church issues to ministry leaders in order to gain their support. The strong desire you feel concerning the need to start new ministries or new congregations may need to be tempered with the need to bring others along in their understanding before needed change can be realized.   "Doing things new while doing things better" becomes a theme that drives much of this person's orientation.

Variants of the Apostolic-Prophetic Gift Cluster

The following APEPT gifted blends are variants of the Apostolic-Prophetic Gift Cluster:

  • Apostolic-Prophetic
  • Apostolic-Prophetic-Evangelistic
  • Apostolic-Prophetic-Pastoral
  • Apostolic-Prophetic-Teaching

Apostolic-Evangelistic (AE) Gift Cluster

Advancing Developers

The Evangelistic Apostle (AE) Gift Cluster blends the primary apostolic gifted role with a secondary emphasis on evangelistic roles. This gift mix produces “Advancing Developers” who may believe they are called to start new approaches, ministries or new congregations / churches in order to share the gospel and mobilize believers more effectively. To prepare for this type of ministry you will need to learn a lot about cultural groups in the community and the congregation in order to understand how to share the gospel in culturally-appropriate ways. You may need to develop new, contextual approaches since no “off-the-shelf” evangelistic presentation “fits” the particular people group you are attempting to reach. You may also need to develop new approaches to mobilizing believers in community outreach that are sensitive to the cultural differences of the group you are trying to reach. The desire to see rapid change that you feel may need to be tempered with the need to take the time to understand your audience more completely so that when you share the gospel message it will be presented in a way that they can understand and be able to respond to it.  "Doing things new while doing things now" becomes a theme that drives much of this person's orientation.

Variants of the Apostolic-Evangelistic Gift Cluster

The following APEPT gifted blends are variants of the Apostolic-Evangelistic Gift Cluster:

  • Apostolic-Evangelistic
  • Apostolic-Evangelistic-Prophetic
  • Apostolic-Evangelistic-Pastoral
  • Apostolic-Evangelistic-Teaching

Apostolic-Pastoral (APa) Gift Cluster

Relating Developers

The Pastoral Apostle (APa) Gift Cluster blends the primary apostolic gifted role with a secondary emphasis on pastoral roles.  This gift mix produces “Relating Developers” who may believe they are called to start new approaches, ministries or new congregations / churches in order to nurture others in their faith and build ministry teams that work together harmoniously.   To prepare for this type of ministry you will need to learn a lot about the cultural groups in the community and the congregation in order to understand how to coach believers from these groups and encourage them to collaborate in their ministries.  You may need to develop new, contextual approaches to discipling believers from specific cultural backgrounds since no culturally-appropriate “off-the-shelf” discipleship materials exist.  You may also need to develop new approaches to developing missional teams that are sensitive to not only the cultural differences of the team members, but also the culture of the group the team is trying to reach.  The desire to see rapid change that you may feel may need to be tempered with the need to take the time to understand your audience more completely so that your discipling ministry can be used of God to bring transformation and spiritual growth.  Your desire to foster strong interpersonal relationships may need to be tempered if the quest for harmony prevents you from starting new ministries to address the spiritual and intercultural issues that prevent biblical discipleship.    "Doing things new while doing things together" becomes a theme that drives much of this person's orientation.

Variants of the Apostolic-Pastoral Gift Cluster

The following APEPT gifted blends are variants of the Apostolic-Pastoral Gift Cluster:

  • Apostolic-Pastoral
  • Apostolic-Pastoral-Evangelistic
  • Apostolic-Pastoral-Prophetic
  • Apostolic-Pastoral-Teaching

Apostolic-Teaching (AT) Gift Cluster

Establishing Developers

The Teaching Apostle (AT) Gift Cluster blends the primary apostolic gifted role with a secondary emphasis on teaching roles.  This gift mix produces “Establishing Developers” who may believe they are called to start new approaches, ministries or new congregations / churches that train believers in ministry (worship, instruction, fellowship, outreach, & service) and organizes them for effective missional activities.  To prepare for this type of ministry you will need to learn a lot about the cultural groups in the community and the congregation in order to understand how to train believers from these groups in culturally-appropriate ministry forms and equip them for effective missional leadership among their own people groups.  You may need to develop new, contextual approaches to ministry since no culturally-appropriate “off-the-shelf” ministry training materials exist.  You may also need to create new approaches to developing lay leadership that are sensitive to the cultural differences within the missional teams and in the community.  The strong desire you feel concerning the need to start new ministries or new congregations may need to be tempered with the need to bring others along in their understanding before needed change can be realized.  Your desire for competency and orderliness may need to be tempered if it produces a “hardening of the categories” that prevents flexibility and adaptability.   "Doing things new while doing things right" becomes a theme that drives much of this person's orientation.

Variants of the Apostolic-Teaching Gift Cluster

The following APEPT gifted blends are variants of the Apostolic-Teaching Gift Cluster:

  • Apostolic-Teaching
  • Apostolic-Teaching-Evangelistic
  • Apostolic-Teaching-Prophetic
